About this audiobook
A heartbreaking and hilarious memoir by iCarly and Sam & Cat star Jennette McCurdy about her struggles as a former child actor—including eating disorders, addiction, and a complicated relationship with her overbearing mother—and how she retook control of her life.
Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction,” eating little and weighing herself five times a day. She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income.
In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail—just as she chronicles what happens when the dream finally comes true. Cast in a new Nickelodeon series called iCarly, she is thrust into fame. Though Mom is ecstatic, emailing fan club moderators and getting on a first-name basis with the paparazzi (“Hi Gale!”), Jennette is riddled with anxiety, shame, and self-loathing, which manifest into eating disorders, addiction, and a series of unhealthy relationships. These issues only get worse when, soon after taking the lead in the iCarly spinoff Sam & Cat alongside Ariana Grande, her mother dies of cancer. Finally, after discovering therapy and quitting acting, Jennette embarks on recovery and decides for the first time in her life what she really wants.
Told with refreshing candor and dark humor, I’m Glad My Mom Died is an inspiring story of resilience, independence, and the joy of shampooing your own hair.
Editor's Note
Honest and darkly funny…
McCurdy is an actress best known for playing Sam on the Nickelodeon sitcom “iCarly.” Her writing debut is an honest memoir of child stardom under the control of an abusive mother, and how those experiences led to eating disorders and substance abuse before her eventual recovery. Honest and darkly funny, McCurdy’s coming-of-age story offers hope to those struggling to overcome trauma.

Riveting, and a touch of humor. Half in tears, and half unable to put the book down. Would recommend for anyone coming of age or past coming of age with narcissistic parents. Or even those who don't realize they have narcissistic parents. It gives guidance to those who never believed there was any. Powerful, well spoken/worded. I lived her every word.2 people found this helpful

This raw and eye opening memoir really digs deep into what its like to want to please a parent so much despite what the bad habits and insecurities they handed down to us. The fact that it can happen to anyone and proof that no one really knows what is happening in someone else's life is apparent throughout the entire book.2 people found this helpful

An honest and sad account of the author’s life as a child actor and how her mother’s own desires, and push into a life she never wanted turned into abuse and led her into self-destructive lifestyles. Also inspiring to read how through therapy she starts to separate herself from the past to really see the choices that were made for her were not healthy and comes to terms with whom her mother was and her mental illness. As readers we get to see the author’s road to recovery and acceptance2 people found this helpful

I do not read memoirs that much since I am more of a fiction and poetry guy. However, seeing something to come out from Jennette McCurdy really made me happy. As someone who grew up with their kid's show up until my adolescent years, missing her for some years, I was ecstatic to see her come back happier and better. I did not realize I would be tearing up right now while writing this. How this book unraveled her story and how it unraveled some realizations in me gave a great pang in my chest. I wish, as a writer, I could write something as honest as this. This is a must read, not only for its title, but most of all, for Jennette.2 people found this helpful

this book made me realize how absurdly similar my life has been to Jennette’s. i am no famous child actor, but i’m an exmormon with a long history with eating disorders and childhood abuse. Jennette’s narrative style and storytelling abilities hit incredibly close to home. it made me laugh and ponder and nearly sob. I’m grateful I took the time to listen to her story and reflect on my own. although the book covers a lot of heavy themes, i wholeheartedly recommend this to anyone who had a rough childhood, and even those who didn’t.1 person found this helpful

Wow! I’m almost at a loss for words and have tears streaming down my cheeks!! You are a brave soul Jennette!! Not only did you let everyone into your dark world you were also able to narrate the entire audiobook! I don’t understand how you were able to get through the narration!! My daughter grew up watching iCarly and Sam and Cat and I know both of those shows very well And it is astonishing to me how different your life was behind the scenes! I am so sorry that you had to go through all of these things, but I am so thankful that you are in a good place now and speaking out about your experience, because it really does shine a light on the darkness that is happening still to so many young girls!1 person found this helpful

This was heavy but written and read so wonderfully. Jenette has read it wonderfully and getting the actual author to read it makes sure there is nothing misinterpreted in the words. You can also feel the emotion in her voice. I was blown away by this. It is heart wrenching and brutal and honest about ED and realizing how your mother can be abusive but still written in such a charismatic way. She is effortlessly funny and all of the jokes seemed to land for me, which made me chuckle and drop my jaw in public. It is so interesting hearing her life when you have watched her for so long on TV, and basically grew up with her. I'm happy she is where she is now and this book has had great success. She deserves it.1 person found this helpful

Powerful and insightful. Those are the only words that could possibly describe this memoir.
I'm Glad My Mom Died written and narrated by Jeanette McCurdy is a poignant and inspiring tale of a child forced to be an adult far before her time. It highlights the trials and dangers all child actors face.
I listened to this on audiobook and I really feel that is the best way to ingest this content. Narrated in Jeanette's voice, you can't help but hear the pain and strength within the story. Manipulated for decades by her own mother, Jeanette lives through supporting her family through her acting and relentlessly striving to appease her extremely demanding mother. From a young age Jeanette learns to suppress her own happiness, physical and mental health, and desires all in the name of obedience to others. It's a shocking tale of manipulation and the inevitable strength of one's spirit to take control of one's life and live happy.
I give this audiobook a 5/5. I really felt Jeanette told her story in a thorough and comprehensive way. It was detailed without being overdone and it showcased the real dangers child stars face being so young in a manipulative industry. This work shed so much light on a broken system and company within tv and film. I would absolutely listen to this again.1 person found this helpful
