About this audiobook
This brand-new unabridged audio book of The Fellowship of the Ring, the first part of J. R. R. Tolkien’s epic adventure, The Lord of the Rings, is read by the BAFTA award-winning actor, director and author, Andy Serkis.
In a sleepy village in the Shire, a young hobbit is entrusted with an immense task. He must make a perilous journey across Middle-earth to the Cracks of Doom, there to destroy the Ruling Ring of Power – the only thing that prevents the Dark Lord Sauron’s evil dominion.
Thus begins J. R. R. Tolkien’s classic tale of adventure, which continues in The Two Towers and The Return of the King.
Editor's Note
Narrated by Andy Serkis (aka Gollum)…
In an iconic adventure story that inspired the blockbuster film series, the unassuming Frodo Baggins journeys through Middle Earth to destroy a ring that possesses all-consuming power. Tolkien's remarkably imaginative classic is always worth a read (or a re-read) for those who love stories of good triumphing over evil. If the words “my precious” sound all too familiar, it’s because Andy Serkis — the actor who played Gollum — narrates this title.

A great creative reading. The accents are fun and helpful for keeping the characters straight. The singing makes the long lyrics almost bearable. However, getting passed his intense vocal fry was a real challenge for me. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5

It has been so much fun revisiting these books. I completely recommend them. I can't even name a genre that I would recommend them to, I just recommend them to everyone. Okay, realistically there is no romance to speak of, but everything else that is fun and interesting is here. We have sci-fi, fantasy, mystery/thriller, magic and fantasy, young adult, classic, friendship and legend. It's just fun. I love these stories. I never got around to watching the movies, maybe I'll have to do that soon.
Happy reading. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5

Andy Serkis is a gift to humanity. He has done so much to bring the world of Tolkien to life. This was a re-read (actually a listen of the audiobook edition, read by the talented actor Andy Serkis), of The Fellowship of the Ring. Clocking in at 23 hours, this was a long edition, but highly recommended!
After watching the prequel history of Sauron and the making of the rings in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power on the small screen, this novel and the history referenced in it became more alive to me and I felt more grounded in the quest. The fabulous narration (with songs and recitations) was awesome. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5

An absolutely amazing way to finally experience a literary and fantasy masterpiece.
I'm an artist so a lot of my time is spent working on my pieces, which leaves little time for reading books. I finally decided to experience J.R.R.T's classic and was blown away.
Andy Serkis has such an amazing grasp on the world that it is impossible not to be sucked in.2 people found this helpful

You know what this book is about and you either love it or hate it. The first in the larger Lord of the Rings trilogy, FOTR finds our not-so merry band of adventurers dealing with a heavy burden. A mandate to destroy a virtually indestructible ring of power that will grant you power equal to your stature and will corrupt you absolutely if you attempt to use. FOTR is the best of the three and once you get past the excess poetry and songs (Tolkien was a philologist who invented multiple languages in his world-building quest... you've got to expect some poetry) you'll find an almost flawlessly constructed world of epic fantasy. Sure, there's been a lot of ink spilled over the apparently regressive politics and culture of Middle Earth, but it's fantasy for Pete's sake. Tolkien's literary politics were, though a product of his time, not ill meaning. If anything, it can be read as an allegory for the horrors of modernity and the types of wars that come with it (though not by Tolkien himself). He's not Heinlein after all! A classic and must read for all, not just fantasy fans. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5

Now I recall why I have not re-read the LotR in 40 years. It isn't solely the interminable poems and songs. It is the _endless_ trivial details (which direction someone walks, for example) that have no real bearing on the outcome of the plot or the development of the characters. I know this is a beloved classic and all us fantasy fiction fans owe Tolkien a great debt of gratitude. But jeez, a strong editor sure could have tighted this thing up. (Horrible thought: one did so. Tolkien's original was even longer!)
